A painting behaves differently. It is one image, chosen deliberately, made by hand, and put on a wall where you will walk past it every morning for thirty years. It is not a better record of the day than a photograph. A photograph is a far more accurate record. It is a different kind of object entirely: something made slowly, by a person, about you.
This is how a commission actually works in Dubai, what it costs, and how to think about it.
What a commissioned portrait actually is
A Saehae commission is an original painting: acrylic, applied by hand, on fine canvas, worked in studio from photographs that you supply. It is signed, finished with a protective varnish, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
It is worth being precise about what it is not, because the market around it is muddled. It is not live event painting. We do not set up an easel at your reception. It is not a photograph run through a filter and printed onto canvas, which is a service several companies in the UAE offer and which produces a different object at a different price. And it is not a digital illustration.
The distinction that matters is not "handmade is better." It is that a painting is an interpretation and a print is a reproduction. One involves a person making thousands of small decisions about you. The other does not. Why more couples in the UAE are commissioning paintings
The wedding industry's own read on 2026 is that personalisation has stopped being a decorative flourish and become the organising idea. Planners across Dubai describe a move toward "bespoke elegance over opulence" and craftsmanship over excess. Couples want the celebration to say something specific about them rather than reproduce a template.
The scale underneath that shift is not small. Tens of thousands of couples marry in the UAE every year, and that is before you count the destination weddings the country draws from all over the world. Very few of them end up with anything on the wall except a photograph.
What makes portraiture unusually well suited to this market is that the UAE's weddings are not one tradition but many, often in the same family. How a commission works
Six steps, and the first one is the one people underestimate.

- Confirm the piece. We agree the tier, canvas size, scope and price in dirhams, and issue an order summary.
- Reserve your slot. Payment is made in full in advance; this books studio time and begins the work.
- The painting is made. By hand, over several weeks. Timelines vary with size and detail, and the larger tiers include progress previews so you are never wondering.
- Proof and revisions. You see a digital proof and can request the minor revisions included in your tier before the piece is finished.
- Signed and delivered. Varnished, signed, and delivered to your door in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and anywhere in the UAE.

When to commission
The UAE wedding season runs roughly October to April, with the heaviest months falling between November and March. That is the period when the good venues book out a year or more ahead.
A painting does not need that kind of runway, but it does take several weeks, and it is a calmer thing to commission when you are not also choosing caterers. Two windows tend to work well: the quiet months after the wedding, when the photographs have arrived and you finally have time to look at them properly; and the run-up to a first anniversary, which is the most common reason people commission a wedding portrait as a gift rather than a purchase.

Questions we are actually asked
Can you paint from an old or imperfect photograph?
Often, yes, and these are among the most rewarding commissions. Faded prints, small scans, film grain: none of it is disqualifying, because the painting is not trying to reproduce the pixels. What matters is whether the faces and the expressions are legible. Send it and we will tell you honestly whether it can carry a painting.
Can several photographs be combined into one painting?
Yes. Custom composition from multiple photographs is included in the Grand tier and in Bespoke commissions: the couple from one frame, the setting from another, or a family group that never quite stood together in a single shot.
Do you paint traditional Emirati and South Asian wedding dress?
Yes. Kandura, bisht and ghutra; lehenga and sari; gown and tuxedo. Traditional dress is usually the most technically demanding part of a portrait, whether that is the drape of a bisht or the light caught in beadwork. It is also usually the part people care most about getting right.
