An anniversary is a strange thing to shop for. The occasion is enormous, a whole year of a life together, or ten, or twenty-five, and the gifts on offer are mostly things that disappear. Flowers wilt within the week. Chocolates are gone by Sunday. A dinner is wonderful and then it is a memory and a receipt. Even the reliable standbys, another watch, another bottle of scent, tend to say occasion rather than say anything about the two people the occasion is for.
A painting behaves differently. It is made once, by hand, about your marriage specifically, and then it hangs where you will both walk past it every day until the next anniversary and long after. It does not compete with the flowers. It is simply the part of the anniversary that stays.
Here is why a portrait suits an anniversary so well, which milestones tend to call for one, and how to think about commissioning it in the UAE.
What the anniversary years actually ask for
The traditional list is older and lovelier than most people realise. The first anniversary is paper, a blank page for a story only just begun. The fifth is wood, something that has taken root. The tenth is tin, a metal prized for being both durable and flexible, which is a fair description of a decade of marriage. The twenty-fifth is silver and the fiftieth is gold.
Those two, silver and gold, come with a genuinely romantic origin. In medieval Europe a husband would crown his wife with a silver wreath on their twenty-fifth anniversary, and a gold one on their fiftieth. The gift was not an object to use. It was a public marker of endurance, worn on the head, saying: look how long this has lasted.
A portrait sits comfortably inside every one of those years, because it is not really competing with paper or tin or silver. It is doing the same job the silver wreath did. It marks endurance, and it does so somewhere everyone can see it.
Why a portrait suits an anniversary, in a way it cannot suit a wedding
A wedding portrait captures a single, famous day. An anniversary portrait can do something a wedding one cannot: it can hold time.
You have choices that only exist years in. You can paint the two of you as you are now, a little older, which is its own quiet statement about a marriage that has kept going. You can return to the wedding photograph and finally give it the wall it always deserved. You can reach further back, to the day you met, or a honeymoon, or a first home. Or you can ask for a composition that brings more than one of those together, a couple from one photograph in a setting from another. That kind of custom composition is something a painting can do and a print simply cannot, because a painting is built rather than reproduced.
The point of a wedding portrait is the day. The point of an anniversary portrait is the distance travelled since.
The milestones people choose
Any anniversary is a good reason, but a few tend to be the ones people mark with something permanent.
- The first. Paper, and by far the most common moment to commission a wedding portrait as a gift rather than a purchase. The photographs have finally arrived, the wedding fog has cleared, and there is time to choose the one image worth hanging. See how a wedding portrait commission works.
- The tenth. A decade is long enough to feel like an achievement and recent enough that a good photograph exists. Couples often want to be painted as they are now, sometimes with children added to the frame.
- The twenty-fifth. Silver. This is the one people plan for, and often the one where the family clubs together on a single serious gift instead of many small ones. An old wedding photograph, painted at a generous size, is a favourite here.
- The fiftieth. Gold. Frequently commissioned by children or grandchildren, and frequently from a small, imperfect, decades-old print. That the photograph is worn is not a problem. It is often the reason a painting is the right medium.
Which photograph to use
For an anniversary you are usually choosing between three kinds of image: the original wedding photograph, a recent picture of the two of you, or something combined. There is no wrong answer, but the choice shapes the painting, and the photograph you love most is not always the one that will make the best portrait. We wrote a full guide to exactly this decision: how to choose the photograph to turn into a painting.
One reassurance worth repeating, because it stops people before they start: an old or low-quality photograph is rarely a barrier. A painting interprets rather than copies, so a faded golden-anniversary print carries a portrait perfectly well. If you are weighing a painting against simply printing the photo onto canvas, we set out that difference honestly, including when a print is the better buy, in hand-painted portrait vs canvas print.
Sizes, timing, and keeping it a surprise
Commissions begin at AED 4,500 for the Intimate size and scale up with the canvas; the full breakdown of tiers sits on the commissions page. A larger canvas is worth considering for the milestone years, a silver or golden anniversary in particular, where the piece is meant to be the centre of a room rather than a corner of it.
Two practical notes. First, timing: a painting takes several weeks by hand, so if it needs to arrive for a specific date, start six to eight weeks ahead, and earlier in the busy October to April season. Second, secrecy: an anniversary portrait makes an unusually good surprise, because the person commissioning it supplies the photograph and approves the proof, and the recipient sees nothing until the canvas is unwrapped. We can deliver discreetly, or hold a finished piece for the day itself.
Questions we are actually asked
Can you paint from an old wedding photograph for a milestone anniversary?
Yes, and for a silver or golden anniversary it is often the whole point. The print can be small, faded or grainy. What matters is whether the faces and the expressions are legible, not the resolution, because the painting is not trying to reproduce the pixels. Send it and we will tell you honestly whether it can carry a portrait.
Can it be kept a surprise?
Very often it is. You supply the photograph and approve the digital proof yourself, so your partner sees nothing until the finished canvas arrives. We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the rest of the UAE, discreetly, or on a date you choose.
When should I order so it arrives in time?
Allow six to eight weeks for a comfortable margin, more for the larger sizes and more again in the run-up to the wedding season. If your date is sooner than that, ask anyway. We will tell you honestly what is possible rather than promise what is not.
Mark the year with something that stays
Send us the photograph, the wedding one or a recent one, and the anniversary you are marking. We will tell you honestly whether it will make a painting, and what it would take.
